Argentina is known as one of the giants of football in the world. The country developed and continues to develop many football legends. The country is known for having a huge passion for football and supporting its country through its football journey. Before the World Cup was founded the Olympic football events were the most prestigious event. Argentina did not have many outstanding performances and results in the Olympics but continued to qualify and participate. Argentina and Uruagay are neighboring countries with a huge football rivalry. Throughout all events when these two teams matched up there was always fierce competition between the 2 teams. The Campeonato Sudamericano was the football tournament in South America to crown a champion. Argentina was able to secure the title against Brazil in the finals which crowned their first major event title. In the 1928 Olympic games Argentina performed throughout the tournament to secure a spot in the finals. Argentina ended up losing to Uruagay 4-2 but they still secured a silver medal in the event. At this time of the 1930s Uruagay was known as the giant of South America. Throughout the next few centuries, Argentina performed mediocrely and wasn't able to qualify for a World Cup for multiple tournaments. When the 1960s came around Argentina qualified for their first World Cup in England. They performed very poorly in the tournament and sparked many fights and riots in the city after the event. The team went through many years of re-development throughout the next few years. In 1978 legend Maradona led Argentina to their first World Cup in their home country which was marked as one of the most historic moments in football due to the incredible performance. Argentina won the World Cup again in 1986 in Mexico with Maradona leading the team to the 2nd World Cup in a short period of time. Legend Maradona retired in 1997 ending an era of Argentine football. The many years following many Argentine players went overseas to play in giant teams in Europe. Lionel Messi sparked a new generation of Argentine stars. He played for the well-known club FC Barcelona in Europe and helped Argentina secure 2 Olympic gold medals in the following years. Even though Lionel Messi was dominating this era of football he still didnt have the most prestigious football trophy, the World Cup. Lionel Messi led a young group of young Argentine stars to their first World Cup in a very long period of time. Argentina performed one of the best in the 2022 Qatar World Cup and secured the trophy in their name. When the team arrived back in the country a parade was held with over 5 million people in attendance on the streets of Buenos Aires which marked one of the world's largest gatherings ever. Argentina has proven why they are currently ranked #1 in the world. Their country's deep passion for the sport continues to grow, with a new generation of Argentine stars upcoming there is more expected from the country.
